We
went to Scarborough to see the Naval Warfare in Peasholm
Park that neither of us has seen since we were children.
These date back to about 1927 and the boats have been
repaired and replaced many times over the years but the
event is still worth going to see and enjoyed by
children and adults alike. The battles are not on every
day as after the battles they have to be repaired
because of damage from direct hits etc.
It
is amazing how the ducks, geese and swans just take all
the noise of the crowds and the loud bangs in their
stride. There are loads of birds on and around the water
and they just get out of the way of the battles and
float around the outside unperturbed.
If
you are able to go then make sure you get there about 2
pm even though the event doesn't start until 3pm. This
is because there is a chap playing the organ for an hour
and telling you about the battles. The music was great
and lots of people sang along which made for a party
atmosphere. Selection of food at the cafe as well as ice
cream etc. It isn't on every day as sometimes the boats
get damaged and need to be repaired.

View from above the harbour looking south we set off
from the railway station and descended slowly towards
the seafront.

Skate park along the promenade about half way to
Peasholm Park-it has two big stunt
arenas and was full of people on bikes, skateboards and
roller blades. It was a special event the day we were
there and the Lord and Lady Mayoress were there offering
support. It was hard to believe that young and old could
be there all together doing stunts and having a really
great time. Some of the things they do are just beyond
belief. We will definitely be going to have a look at
this again for sure.

This is the man from Rotherham playing the organ in the
middle of the lake. He rowed himself there and he was
great with the audience from the word go. He had
everyone cheering the goodies and booing the baddies and
singing along before the battles started. He played
music from the films and it sounded wonderful in the
open air

The ducks, geese and swans looking to be fed before the
battles commenced

Notice the geese on the side of the lake taking no
notice of the bangs and cheers and boos

The R.A.F to the rescue

Escort vessels and HMS Asturias

Protecting Asturias from the enemy

R.A.F again flying in to help

Taking a bow

What a surprise they weren't remote controlled, each one
had man inside operating them and firing missiles
at the other boats. It can't have been easy as there
were two battles and they are either sitting in a
strange position or lying down.
The escort boats and the men in them-they must have
worked the hardest apart from the enemy ship that had to
fight all of them off with the help of a submarine.
It
is well worth going to see and there are some amazing
walks in the park as well as a nature trail so if you
can get there it is worth going. The battles are only in
the summer months .
Hope you enjoyed our day out.
