Hull Visit The purpose of the visit was to go to the Art Gallery and see The Big Trees by David Hockney who lives in Bridlington and LA and we pass his house most days. Vic has past him on the Wolds Road while he was painting and had a word with him though Vic didn't want to say too much in case he interrupted the artists line of thought. This piece of art consists of 54 canvases and the size was determined by the size of the large wall at the Royal Academy in London. Mr Hockney was determined to make a piece of artwork that fitted that space so that no other piece of artwork could be posted by the side of it. The paintings are of a place of the Wolds Road as are many of the Hockney paintings. There was a video made by David at his home in Bridlington telling us how he did the paintings and pieced them together to make this huge piece. Well worth seeing both of them if you get the chance.
This is the painting, or should I say paintings cause all the small canvases are transported separately and he had to rent a big warehouse in Bridlington to see it all when it was finished and to label and package the different pieces to be sent to the various galleries where it will be shown. It has been valued at 10million pounds so needs careful packaging.
This is the Maritime Museum in Hull. Worth a visit as it shows the fishing industry from the past and whaling is featured with some beautiful examples of scrimshaw.
The Art Gallery
Showing the lovely pillars of the art gallery--the building looks very plain until you look at it more closely,
This is Princes Quay which used to be a very busy part of Hull when fishing was important--on the left there is still a Seaman's Mission that does a nice roast dinner for a very reasonable price-we have never been there as we like to explore different types of food and have found a lovely bistro where we have been the twice now.
There always seems to be music in the city shopping areas this was a Mexican Band and we saw a girl playing a guitar and singing and she sounded lovely. In the background is one of the shopping malls with the usual type of shops that every city has these days
There are some beautiful quiet areas in the City just off where the shops are-this is a lovely one with lots of space and two ponds -and some shade which was nice on the day we went as it was so hot
A poor old thing having a rest in the shade
Another pond with a fountain-the bird sounds in this garden are just amazing
Another nice space just off the busy city centre
Shops in the background
I hope you enjoyed seeing a bit of Hull. There is a lot more to see for sure. At least another 4 museums all different and all very interesting. Lots and lots of shops and buses that take you from the Interchange to many more shopping places if you like shopping. We seem to be allergic to shopping but we do love all the other things that cities have to offer.
