We went on a walk to a part of Beverley that
we had never been to before. For years we
had tried to find the Beverley Canal but had
been looking in the wrong place. It was an
interesting walk with things that we hadn't
expected to find at all. A lot of it was
over common grazing land that was surrounded
by industrial units. The Common land adjoined the Beverley Canal
which at one time, not so long ago had
barges on it where owners lived but these were
removed as people objected about the barge
dwellers not paying council tax. Even though
they offered to pay they were still removed.
We did see two barges still with people in
them but not sure why they were still there.
Most of the common land, which was a huge
area, had horses grazing. There were
hundreds of horses of all different types
and many had foals. Not a clue who owns them
or if anyone does at all but they all look
very happy and healthy.
Vic has just looked up about the use of the
land and the use of the land goes back to
the 1277 so a lot of history there.

Bridlington Station has it's usual floral
displays both outside and in. The white
parts on the wall at the back are where they
had even more flowers in planters last year
but the watering system got into the bricks
so it wasn't a good idea.

An old
cottage at the side of the canal. This is
now on a road that used to be the main road
but a fast, new road has been built instead.
I bet it was really peaceful for a while but
now everywhere around there are new
industrial units and the cottage is for
sale. There were more beautiful cottages and
houses that backed onto the canal but all
were now in a very big industrial area--how
times change when a new fast road link is
built.

A nice
pub where we would have gone for a bite to
eat if it had been open. We had already
found a really nice place when we got off
the train in Beverley. The lady there made
steak pies that were terrific -well so Vic
said. I had a tuna salad sandwich lol.

The
canal

These 2
horses were huge-they were like the dray
horses that I remember from when I was a
child

More
horses and showing the industrial units all
around in the distance

A lovely
pony

Not a
clue what this type of barge is at all but
intend to try to find out

We
should have crossed this bridge which goes
over the Beverley Drain but we missed it
completely and only saw it as we walked
along the side of the canal. Beverley drain
is a small river that I image will be a
large river when it rains heavily as Vic has
just read that the common (Swine Moor)
floods at times of heavy rain and attracts
birds so that will be another day to go
there. We veered left and ended up on
the new, busy road but soon found a way to
get off it again.

This was
taken from another very small bridge over
the Drain. Aren't the signets beautiful from
above? Just after Vic took this photograph
they all tucked theirs heads in and went to
sleep--we must be very boring lol

The
'Drain' again and doesn't it look like a
beautiful place? Close up to either side of
this picture are industrial units yet again
and the path comes out onto a very busy road
in the middle of large industrial units.
Such wonder we found in amongst all the
industry.

Another
view of our station here at Bridlington
Hope you
enjoyed the trip to Beverley Canal and
'Drain'
